Miss Edwards married college boyfriend Trevor Upham yesterday at a local Methodist church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina - the ceremony taking place beside an altar which had been lit in her mother's memory. Cate Edwards, the daughter of disgraced politician John Edwards and the late Elizabeth Edwards, married college sweetheart, Dr. Trevor Upham, in Chapel Hill, NC on Saturday.
Although John Edwards walked his daughter down the aisle, the former Presidential candidate -- who fathered a child with mistress Rielle Hunter  -- successfully avoided all cameras during the ceremony. Her 13-year-old sister, Emma Claire, was maid of honor, while their brother, Jack, 11, was a groomsman.
Edwards was reportedly open to the idea, but her late mother's family was 'dead-set' against it.A source told the Enquirer: 'Elizabeth's family is furious at the mere suggestion of it,' and said the gesture would be a 'huge slap in the face.It was a celebration tinged with sadness, coming so soon after her mother's death Miss Edwards is clearly also close with her father, despite his long-term affair and love child - both exposed as her mother fought her terminal battle with cancer.
But as Cate Edwards, the daughter of former presidential candidate John and his late wife Elizabeth, married her childhood sweetheart yesterday, she declared: 'It was what she would have wanted.'
Cate and Upham, a surgical fellow in Washington, D.C., got engaged two weeks prior to Elizabeth Edward's Dec. 7, 2010 passing after a long battle with breast cancer.
