Meanwhile, UC President Mark Yudof on Sunday said he was "appalled" by the use of force against nonviolent campus protesters and announced he would convene a meeting of chancellors from all 10 UC campuses to ensure law enforcement reacts proportionally to future protests.
Two UC Davis police officers involved in the pepper spraying of protesters who were peacefully sitting and linking arms were placed on paid administrative leave Sunday, university officials announced.
Protesters had erected about 25 tents on the campus quad, leading to the police response. Ten protesters were cited and released on misdemeanor charges of unlawful assembly and failure to disperse. Eleven were treated on campus after being pepper sprayed, and two were taken to a local hospital and released, according to university officials.
The UC Davis police chief has said the officers were surrounded by protesters and needed to get out.Mitchel Benson, spokesman for UC Davis, said the officers' names would not be released and that they would be on paid leave indefinitely. He said no other encampments have sprung up on campus since the arrests, though a camp remains at nearby Central Park. The recent incidents make clear the time has come to take strong action to recommit to the ideal of peaceful protest," Yudof said in a statement. "Free speech is part of the DNA of this university, and nonviolent protest has long been central to our history.
The UC Davis faculty association on Saturday called for the resignation of Chancellor Linda Katehi, writing that she had displayed "gross failure of leadership."
Katehi on Sunday released a statement that read, in part, "I am deeply saddened that this happened on our campus, and as chancellor, I take full responsibility. ... I feel very sorry for the harm our students were subjected to and I vow to work tirelessly to make the campus a more welcoming and safe place.
She said a task force she created to investigate the matter had 30 days to report its findings. She said its members will include faculty, staff and students to be chosen this week.Protesters at UC Berkeley were rammed by police with batons at a similar protest Nov. 9.
